February is Black History Month across Canada and African Heritage Month here in Nova Scotia. Our campus will be hosting various events throughout the month for students, staff, and faculty, exploring themes of African Heritage, Black Excellence, and Changing Narratives for Future Generations.

From celebrating culture, resilience, and legacy, to connecting with their roots, members of our Acadia community shared what African Heritage Month means to them.

Dr. Alicia Noreiga-Mundaroy
Assistant Professor, Department of Community Development

鈥淎frican Heritage Month means a celebration of resilience and excellence. It鈥檚 acknowledging the ways our forefathers have fought and overcome many obstacles and the ways Black people today continue to make a huge impact on society鈥檚 success.

As a Black woman in academia, I believe it is my duty to be a role model, to guide Black youth in becoming society鈥檚 leaders.鈥

Angelina Simmonds
Enrolment Advisor, African Nova Scotian Communities and People of African Descent

鈥淎frican Heritage Month means a time for us to celebrate everything that our Black ancestors have done before us and for us to celebrate Black culture here in Canada.鈥

Angel Percentie
Second Year English Student

鈥淔or me, African Heritage Month means connecting with my roots. I think about the Bahamas, where I鈥檓 from, and the sun, sand, and sea. I think about my grandmother who prepares Bahamian dishes for us 鈥 johnny cake and souse. I think about my mother who鈥檚 a teacher and she鈥檚 preparing the future generation of Black students.鈥

Gift Iluyomade
Third Year Psychology Student

鈥淎frican Heritage Month is an opportunity to learn more about the people in the past and how they influenced their cultures and their lives and how they still influence me today. I get to learn more about their values and virtues and apply that to my own life.鈥

Taya Lucas-Desmond
Third Year Environmental Science Student

鈥淎frican Heritage Month means acknowledging the past and celebrating how far we鈥檝e come in the present. It also means looking towards the future for what we can accomplish.鈥
