Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a learning design framework that takes into account the diversity in the learning process of all students – how each person learns is unique to the individual. The UDL teaches educators how to use such framework into curriculums and learning experiences to promote student engagement and anticipate variability within the classroom – while still maintaining high academic standards.

The three central principle of UDL are providing multiple means of engagement, representation, action and expression. Here are some examples of small changes you can make to make big differences to your students:

Post general outlines/lecture material ahead of your lecture.
Students can prepare before class by reviewing the outlines/lecture material and be more prepared for taking notes during the lecture.

Use more than one method (visual, auditory, hands-on) when presenting content.
Some examples include captioned videos, flow charts and diagrams.

Highlight patterns, connections between concepts, big ideas and relationships.

This will help students to learning new concepts and allocate their time efficiently when studying.

Break larger tasks into smaller tasks—and assign value.
For example, a project worth 40% of the final grade can be broken down into several deadlines, such as a thesis state, an outline and a reference list, a draft, and a final project. Each of the deadlines could be assigned a percentage value.

Use different forms/scheme of evaluation.

Give straightforward, clear, and consistent instructions.

Course/project/assignment instructions should be consistent in all format, using straightforward and clear language to avoid unnecessarily confusion and anxiety.
